You Can Make a Difference Even on Vacation: Preloved Rawai, Phuket
When exploring Phuket, it’s easy to spend your days visiting beaches, discovering local cafés and browsing souvenir shops. But in Rawai, there is another kind of place worth knowing about — one where second-hand shopping helps support the local community.
I’m volunteering at Preloved Rawai, a charity second-hand shop located at Phuket Art Village. The idea behind it is simple: give useful things a second life and turn their sale into support for schools helping underprivileged children in Phuket and other small charitable organisations across the island.
It’s a project that brings together reuse, community spirit and a practical way for people to help.
What Is Preloved Rawai?
Preloved Rawai is a second-hand shop with a charitable purpose. We receive donations of clothes, household items and other useful belongings that are still in good condition. These items are then sold in the shop, and the money raised is transferred to support local schools and small charitable organisations in Phuket.
Instead of throwing away things we no longer need, we can pass them on to someone who will use them. And instead of the items simply changing hands, their sale can also help support people in the local community.
It’s a small but meaningful cycle: one person donates, another finds something useful, and the money raised goes towards good causes.
What Can You Find in the Shop?
Because the shop depends on donations, the selection changes regularly. That’s part of the appeal of second-hand shopping — you never know exactly what you might discover.
Depending on what has been donated, you may find:
Clothes and everyday accessories
Swimming items and beachwear
Lightweight, casual clothes suitable for Phuket’s tropical weather
Children’s toys
Household items and practical things for everyday use
Other pre-loved belongings in good, usable condition
You don’t need to be looking for anything specific to stop by. You might come in for one thing and discover something else you can use.
A Useful Stop for Tourists in Rawai
Preloved Rawai can also be a practical place to visit during your holiday in Phuket.
Perhaps you forgot to pack something for the beach, need a few extra clothes for the warm weather, or are travelling with children who would enjoy some toys during your stay. Depending on current stock, you may find what you need without buying everything brand-new.
Second-hand shopping can be particularly useful when you’re travelling and only need certain things for a short time. It can also be a more thoughtful alternative to buying new items that you might leave behind when your holiday ends.
And there’s an added benefit: when you buy something at Preloved Rawai, you’re also contributing to the fundraising effort that supports local charitable organisations.
The stock changes as donations arrive, so availability isn’t guaranteed. But if you’re exploring Rawai, it’s worth taking a look.
Have Things You No Longer Need? Consider Donating Them
Many of us have clothes, household belongings and other useful items sitting at home that we no longer use. If they’re still in good condition, someone else may be able to enjoy them.
Preloved Rawai accepts donations of clothes, household items and other useful belongings, provided they are in good, usable condition.
Before bringing anything in, please make sure your donations are clean and ready for someone else to use. If you’re unsure whether a particular item is suitable, check with the shop first.
Your donation may become something another person needs, and the money raised from its sale can help support schools for underprivileged children and small charitable organisations in Phuket.
It’s a simple way to reduce waste while contributing to the community.
Small Actions Can Make a Difference
What I like about this kind of project is that people can contribute in different ways.
You can donate things you no longer need. You can shop for something useful. You can volunteer your time. Even a small purchase becomes part of a larger effort to raise funds for local causes.
The money raised helps support schools working with underprivileged children in Phuket, as well as other small charitable organisations on the island.
For me, volunteering at Preloved Rawai is a way to be involved in the community beyond my own work. It is also a reminder that useful things don’t have to be new, and that giving something a second life can benefit more than one person.
